Retinol
Retinol supports normal epithelial-cell function. A certain level of vitamin A is required for glycoprotein synthesis, and vitamin A also plays an important role in normal immune-system function. Decades of research have shown that topical retinol can visibly improve firmness, reduce the appearance of fine lines, improve uneven skin tone, and promote a smoother, more refined skin surface.
Retinoids, synthetic equivalents of vitamin A, help regulate cell differentiation by influencing proliferation and intercellular communication. When retinoids enter a cell, they interact with nuclear receptors, affecting gene-expression pathways associated with these processes.
Effects of retinol on the epidermis include
supporting the production of proteins and the collagen-fiber network while helping slow the breakdown of existing collagen. Together, these effects can increase the skin’s collagen content and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Retinol also accelerates cell turnover in the basal layer, supporting renewal of the skin’s upper layers and resulting in a noticeably smoother, fresher-looking complexion.
- increased mitotic activity of keratinocytes.
- normalization of keratinization, differentiation, and melanogenesis.
- activation and stimulation of epidermal lipid synthesis and components of the dermal extracellular matrix.
- reduction in the number of atypical cells.
Directions
In the evening, apply a pea-sized amount to cleansed skin, avoiding the eye area. For optimal results, wait approximately 30 minutes before applying another product.
Begin once weekly, then increase to twice weekly and gradually to no more than every other day as tolerated. Due to the high retinol concentration, consult a dermatologist if appropriate for your skin. Retinol can increase sun sensitivity in some users. Always use a high-SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen during the course of treatment.
